“Downton Abbey” creator Julian Fellowes has opened up about Matthew Crawley’s death and actor Dan Stevens’ departure from the show, revealing spoilers about what’s next for the now-widowed Lady Mary (Michelle Dockery).

In a Q&A with the New York Times on the occasion of his Emmy nomination, Fellowes revealed that he feels that the “Downton Abbey” team has been forgiven for the shocking death of Matthew Crawley in the Season 3 finale.

“Once people had realized it was Dan [Steven]’s choice and not us, then we were forgiven,” Fellowes revealed.

“Dan felt three years were long enough for him and he wanted to get on with his film career and all the rest of it. We wish him nothing but good things.”

Fellowes also revealed some spoilers about how – and when – Season 4 will begin.

“Well the advantage of Dan dying at the end of last season as opposed to the beginning of the new one is we are able to have a six-month gap,” Fellowes said.

“So we don’t have to do funerals and memorials and all that stuff. That has all happened — we rejoin the family six months after his death.

“The sort of subtitle of the series is the rebuilding of Mary, really,” he added.

Fellowes also added that we’re unlikely to see the ghost of Matthew Crawley around anytime soon, a la “Dallas.”

Asked if he has any “supernatural subplots” planned, Fellowes answered, “Well we have the disadvantage of there not being too many showers. So I don’t think we can just walk ’round the corner and find him in the shower, and that the last series has been a dream. Maybe you could just find him in the bath.”
