Artist Nickolay Lamm caught our eye last week when his ‘Barbie makeover' images of a Barbie with the proportions of an average 19-year-old girl went viral. It turns out that this isn’t the first Barbie makeover he’s done – in April, Lamm created images of Barbie without makeup.

Lamm created the images as a response to another viral image of a makeup-free Barbie with exaggerated under-eye circles, blemishes, no eyelashes and braces.

“A viral image of Barbie without make-up got me thinking: is this what Barbie would really look like without make-up? Ken is a pretty good looking doll. So, surely Barbie without make-up can’t be too different,” Lamm wrote.“Sure enough, Barbie still looks pretty, even au naturel…”

“The viral image was an exaggeration, which got a lot of people talking. However, it was an exaggerated image which was not based on the real characteristics of the doll," he added.

“The real Barbie without makeup brings up a new point: if Barbie can look good without makeup, why doesn’t Mattel make dolls with a more natural look?”

Lamm also created images of a Bratz doll and Disney princess doll without makeup.

“I think it’s a little bit too hyper-sexualized and I think people don’t say anything because makeup has been on dolls for so long,” Lamm told Today.com.

“People are so used to seeing Barbie with makeup that we don’t realize how much makeup she has on once we take it off,” he added.

“The Barbie and other dolls look better, more natural without makeup and I feel that without the makeup, they still look good and why don’t they sell them without makeup as well?”

“I feel that Barbie, to young girls, it affects their self image in a negative way and the makeup certainly adds to the hyper-sexualized dolls,” he said.
