There’s a potentially dangerous new trend sweeping the modeling and fashion world – tiny Barbie waists.

Grazia reports that model Jazzma Kendrick, socialite Mary Charteris and others are driving the trend by showing off their tiny, altered waists on social media while actresses like Jessica Alba and Gwyneth Paltrow have admitted to using corsets after giving birth to regain their pre-pregnancy bodies.

Celebrity surgeon Dr. Michael Prager told Grazia that he’s seeing patients who are wearing corsets in order to achieve what London doctors are calling a “Barbie waist.”

“Many of my young, slim patients have told me they’re wearing corsets for up to eight hours a day to make their waists smaller,” said Dr. Prager. “Some even wear them while out running or in the gym.”

Prager also said that surgical methods like liposuction are on the rise.

“Requests for liposuction and non-invasive fat-melting treatments for the waist have also increased over the last six months,” he said.

Jazzma Kendrick and other models are likely following the same methods, Dr. Prager said.

“When you look at slightly older pictures of Jazzma, her waist is slim but not as disproportionately slim as it is now,” he said. “The same goes for several of the Victoria’s Secret models.”

“They’re as slim as ever but their waists have got tinier, which just doesn’t happen with diet or exercise,” he added. “In my view, it’s almost certainly the result of surgery or a corset.”

Both methods could be dangerous for trend followers. Dr. Prager warned that excess use of corsets can cause health problems including wasted stomach and back muscles and digestive problems from the stomach being shifted from its original position.

Liposuction risks include permanent changes in skin elasticity, temporary or permanent numbness, life-threatening skin infections, kidney and heart problems and fat embolisms and puncture of internal organs, according to the Mayo Clinic.
