The "Dexter" season 8 premiere was definitely mind-blowing and could hint that Debra will kill Dexter in the end, and him ultimately paying for being a serial killer.
[WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD FROM PREMIERE]
In the season 8 premiere that aired on Sunday, June 30 at 9 p.m. on Showtime, titled "A Beautiful Mind," it's six months after Deb [Jennifer Carpenter] killed La Guerta. She's obviously distraught after walking out on Miami Metro and we find her sleeping with criminal Briggs and snorting coke, smoking weed, and living off a prescription buffet of Xanax, Paxil, and Adderall.
Dexter [Michael C. Hall] goes to try to rescue her from the dinky motel that she's in with Briggs, and while trying to get her, he kills Briggs. Deb calls the police but covers for Dexter.
Previously in the episode, Deb snubs Dexter:
"Do you want to know why I'm not returning your phone calls? Because I don't want to talk to you, and I really don't f--king want to see you ... because you made me compromise everything about myself that I care about, and I hate you for it ... I shot the wrong person in that trailer," Deb told Dexter.
So how does this hint that she may end up killing him at the end of the season 8?
iDigitalTimes describes their reason:
[W]e think that season 8 will end with Dexter being killed by Debra, possibly with the help of Dr. Vogol, after Dexter kills the "Brain Surgeon." It is the only ending that would satisfy the complex feelings fans have about Dexter. Even though we root for him, he is still a bad guy and has killed some people who, while not innocent, did not necessarily deserve death. There has to be a comeuppance for that."
For a recap, the "Brain Surgeon" is the new serial killer that's on the loose in Miami. He shoots his victim in the chest and then opens up their brains and scoops out little piece of their brain, the specific area of the brain that controls empathy, as Dr. Vogel pointed out, the Huffington Post reported.
There have always been little hints that Dexter could die.
"At the end of the season? No," Carpenter recently said. "Someday? Yes, because we all do."
Hall told TV Guide, "Dexter has been playing faster and looser with the code for some time now, and I think there's some unconscious desire to reveal himself and that may manifest itself through reckless behavior."
"We all know that no matter what we do there are going to be a lot of people who are unhappy with it," EP Sara Colleton told The Hollywood Reporter. "We're trying to not think about that and just think of what everyone who has been on the show from the beginning feels is right and that's all we can do. No matter what we do we'll still be excoriated."
