"The Huntsman: Winter's War" writer Evan Spiliotopoulis said that the franchise was actually planning to go two ways after "Snow White and the Huntsman" wrapped up.

"Actually, I think there were two projects that were being developed: There was a 'Snow White and the Huntsman' part 2, and we always intended to do a spinoff on the Huntsman's character," he told USA Today. "The chips fell, the spinoff happened."

As for the title, Spiliotopoulis said that it came as a surprise. However, it made sense "because the film's theme's so much set in the wintry world created by Freya, the wonderful Emily Blunt character."

"It's actually a line of dialogue in the first film. At one point Eric (the Huntsman) is telling Snow White about his past, and he talks about fighting in the winter's war," he said.

Some people might say it's unfair why only the Huntsman's name made it to the title, but Spiliotopoulis explained, "This is very much about Eric and his wife Sara that is alluded to in the first film."

So even though Charlize Theron's Ravenna and Emily Blunt's Freya are important characters in the film, they aren't really the protagonists. As for Kristen Stewart's Snow White, "there wasn't really a place for her," he said.

Director Cedric Nicolas-Troyan also echoed Spiliotopoulis' comments about the love shared by Eric and Sara. But he added that there are other kinds of love they explored in the film.

"The whole movie is about love. Love conquers all. But, love conquers all doesn't mean just the love between a man and a woman. It's the love between a mother and a child. It's the love between a child and its mother. It's the love between a sister and her siblings," he told Collider.

"The Huntsman: Winter's War" has been released on April 22.
