"Star Wars: Episode VII: The Force Awakens" villain Kylo Ren, played by Adam Driver, might be one of the most interesting bad guys of the year.

"I’ve written four 'Star Wars' movies now, and there’s never been a character quite like the one that Adam plays," the film's co-writer Lawrence Kasdan about the villain. "I think you’re going to see something that’s brand new to the saga.”

Sounds good to us! Here are a few things you should know about Kylo Ren:

1. He's Not a Sith

Since the "Star Wars" movies began, the Sith have always been the big bad. Apparently that's no longer the case, because Kylo Ren is pretty high up on the villainous food chain, and he answers to a different master.

"Kylo Ren is not a Sith," director J.J. Abrams told Empire magazine. "He works under Supreme Leader Snoke [Andy Serkis], who is a powerful figure on the Dark Side of the Force."

2. His Lightsaber Is His Own Original Design

Fans lost it over the crossguard lightsaber seen in the first trailer, later revealed to be Kylo's. According to Abrams, speaking with Entertainment Weekly, the villain built the crossguard himself — and it's "as dangerous and as fierce and as ragged as the character."

3. He's a Vader Fanboy

"The movie explains the origins of the mask and where it’s from, but the design was meant to be a nod to the Vader mask," Abrams revealed. "[Ren] is well aware of what’s come before, and that’s very much a part of the story of the film."

4. He Was Born Under a Different Name

Fanning the flames of the Kylo's-actually-a-Solo theory is the revelation that Kylo Ren is not the character's given name. Which brings us to...

5. He's a Knight of Ren

"He is a character who came to the name Kylo Ren when he joined a group called the Knights of Ren," explained Abrams.
