Tyler Perry is being sued over the script for his movie “Temptation,” according to TMZ. A small-time screenwriter, William James, claims that Perry’s plot is similar to a script he wrote in 2009, “Lovers Kill.”
The lawsuit says that both films are centered on a married couple, where the wife is tempted by another man and has an affair that ruins the marriage.
James claims he gave a copy of his script to an associate of Oprah Winfrey, hoping that the script would make its way to Perry.
According to Examiner, Oprah told James she would give it to Perry for “review and consideration.”
“Temptation: Confessions of a Marriage Counselor” earned $49 million but was panned by critics, who called it “beyond dumb” and “flamboyantly bad.”
According to the Christian Post, Perry has previously indicated that “Temptation” was based on a 2008 play called “The Marriage Counselor” that Perry wrote himself – a year before James wrote his script.
Some say that James would be taking a career risk by claiming the script, despite the chance of payment.
"I hope for his sake that a financial come-up is worth the risk of ruining his name by association," said Rodney Carmichael of the website Creative Loathing, who called the association “career suicide.”
"Apparently, he and Perry have something else in common because James obviously has not been reading the critical backlash sparked by 'Temptation,' much of which has blamed Perry for perpetuating rape culture with his latest morality tale," Carmichael wrote.
