Michelle Duggar, mother of 19, was shocked when she looked into the mirror and saw a brand new woman.

Duggar's kids planned an extravagant birthday gift that included a makeover for their mother's 46^th birthday.

 "I enjoyed the fact that my whole family and my girls came up with this amazing way of showing how much they loved me with a 24-hour birthday surprise," Duggar told People. The 46-year-old mom confessed to having the same hairstyle for 40 years - a big rounded curled bang and long frizzy curls.

What was once bad 80s hair was transformed into a sleek, straight, and modern hairdo. Although the outcome was fabulous, the stubborn Duggar found it hard to adjust to her new look. The "19 Kids and Counting" reality star said she would "learn to love it." She was shocked at how much everyone else loved her new look. "You really like it like this? This is how I look when I come out of the shower," the perplexed mom said when the hairstylist and salon patrons complimented her 'do.

"Going from curly to totally straight was a shock for me," Duggar confessed, "but I am loving it and I have been doing both styles, curly and straight, since the cut."

Duggar cut her hair 8 inches - the most she has ever cut her hair. It was her best friend Cindy who suggested the shorter style. "I can trust Cindy," Duggar told the magazine. "But my back was to the mirror and I didn't know how much I got taken off. It was too funny when I realized how much was gone! And it felt so light."

So what does husband Jim Bob think of his wife's sleek and sophisticated new look?

"I know Jim Bob likes it long and I am trying to impress him - what he likes is what I want," she says. "I think he was a little shocked at first, it was so straight and so different. But he does like it. I think I shocked everyone at the [birthday] party. They were very surprised."

Duggar isn't the only one learning to get used to her new straight hair; her youngest child, 2-year-old Josie, is also "learning to love" the new hairstyle.

"Little Josie kept touching my hand and saying, 'Mommy? Mommy? Mommy?'" Duggar says. "She wanted to make sure I was still me." Nevertheless, Duggar embraces the change, "I definitely like the new look," Duggar insists. "It has been fun."
