The Walking Dead Season 3 premiered on Sunday, Oct. 14 to a record-setting 10.9 million viewers. Although The Walking Dead ratings have been sky-high since its 2010 debut, this season 3 premiere showed a 50% increase compared to the season 2 premiere.
The Walking Dead season 3 premiere broke the record of the most watched drama telecast on basic cable television. The zombie series surpassed TNT's The Closer, which fell just below 10 million at its highest point.
Two encore airings were broadcasted on Sunday night, resulting in a total of 15.2 million viewers watching The Walking Dead. Of the 15.2 million, 10.3 million included adults ages 18-49 and 8.6 million adults ages 25-54.
According to a report from AMC, The Walking Dead season 3 premiere outperformed popular shows including "Modern Family," "The Big Bang Theory," "The Voice," "Jersey Shore," and mini-series "Hatfields & McCoys," in the 18-49 age demographic.
"Thank you to the fans for making 'The Walking Dead' such a tremendous success," AMC president Charlie Collier said in a statement.
"We are honored and humbled that television's largest adult audience resides on AMC. So many people on both sides of the camera worked tirelessly on this project, and I thank and congratulate each of them for their amazing contribution."
