Photos of uniforms for the Brooklyn Nets 'Brooklynette' Cheerleaders have hit the web and have received less than positive reviews.
"They need to go back to the drawing board. They look trashy and cheap," said a commenter on FashionBombDaily.com.
The black and white outfits feature skimpy and revealing styles, much like other NBA cheerleading uniforms. The Brooklynettes will be sporting looks reminiscent of 2001 nightclub attire. Zipper jersey mini-dresses you may remember seeing in music videos 10 years ago are making a comeback for the Nets' cheer squad. Leatherette halter tops, studded black knee-high boots with "Brooklyn" printed across the leg, and black and white striped boyshorts don't seem to impress many fans.
If you think the outfits are too "street," then you have the right idea because that's exactly what designer, David Dalrymple, was looking for.
The 45-year-old designer, who famously designed Britney Spears' 2000 VMA nude diamond encrusted bodysuit and has worked with renowned stylist Patricia Field, told the New York Post that he wanted the uniforms to have a strong and hard edge. "The uniforms are feminine and strong...This isn't palm trees and sunshine. It's New York City, and it's Brooklyn."
He continued to explain that the outfits need to correctly represent the borough saying, "It's a different sensibility. We go hard...For these costumes, we needed things that these women can dance and move in, but we wanted to bring in street elements. We needed to find that bridge of street fashion that can actually work on the court."
As for the video-girl style aesthetic, Dalrymple says, "I do a lot of clothes for people in music." He added, "My look is very pop star, or for the person who feels like a pop star,"
Also, the fact that the co-owner of the team is rap artist Jay-Z probably had something to do with the design.
According to the designer, the uniforms include "a jumpsuit, a neoprene scuba blazer with sequin leggings, a little cropped warm-up jacket, and painted sequin leggings."

The 20-women cheerleading squad will debut the new uniforms when the Nets preseason begins next month. The Nets will open the season against the Knicks at the Barclays Center on November 1.

Given the risks that “Elementary” has been taking with the Sherlock Holmes mythology, converting not one but two main characters from men into women, it seems surprising that they chose to keep Sherlock British.
