Super Junior has been nominated for this year’s MTV European Music Awards, where Korean rapper Psy too is nominated with his viral video “Gangnam Style.”
Super Junior will be competing for the Best Asian Act against Japan’s EXILE, China’s Hangeng, Taiwan’s Jolin Tsai, and Malaysia’s Yuna.
Ironically, Hangeng is a former member of Super Junior.
The winner will move onto compete for the Best Worldwide Act, of which Korean pop group Big Bang was the winner in 2011.
The Korean pop group consisting of 10 members - Leeteuk, Yesung, Kangin, Shindong, Sungmin, Eunhyuk, Siwon, Donghae, Ryeowook and Kyuhyun - was originally formed in 2005 by SM Entertainment in South Korea, and once had a total of 13 members at its peak.
Their best-selling single "Sorry, Sorry" released in 2009 earned Super Junior their global fame, and has been the best-selling K-pop artist for three consecutive years.
Super Junior is expected to hit a total of 500,000 album sales for two years in a row, according to Kpopstarz.
The overnight sensation “Gangnam Style” by Korean rapper Psy is nominated for the Best Video.
Psy’s “Gangnam Style” faces a rather tough competition – against Katy Perry’s “Wide Awake,” Lady Gaga’s “Marry the Night,” M.I.A.’s “Bad Girls” and Rihanna’s “We Found Love.”
"OMG~!!! I am nominated 'BEST VIDEO' at #EMA~!!!" Psy tweeted off his excitement.
The voting process is composed of three phases.
From Sept. 17 to Oct. 14, fans in Southeast Asia, China, Taiwan, Japan and Korea may vote for the five nominees to select the Best Asia Act, said MTV. The winner will be announced on Oct. 15.
The regional winner from Best Australia/New Zealand Act will be selected at the same time.
From Oct. 15 to 29, the Worldwide Act Asia Pacific winner will be determined from the winners of the Best Asia Act and Best Australia/New Zealand Act.
The winner will represent the Asia Pacific region at the 2012 MTV EMA for the Worldwide Act category.
Results of continental regional competitions will be announced online on 30 October, according to MTV.
The last phase lasts from Oct. 30 to Nov. 9, when the final votes for the winner of the Worldwide Act award will be casted.
Eventually, MTV EMA will take place on November 11 in Frankfurt, Germany.
