"There can be no motivation for this action other than greed," Herald Sun quoted a spokeswoman saying. The spokeswoman pointed out that in Europe the fine for breach of security is very little as compared to what the magazine would gain from the sale of issues containing such pictures.
"We will not be commenting on potential legal action concerning the alleged intended publication of the photos in Italy save to say that all proportionate responses will be kept under review," the spokeswoman said.
"Any such publication would serve no purpose other than to cause further, entirely unjustifiable upset to the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, who were enjoying time alone together in the privacy of a relative's home."
After French gossip magazine Closer first published the pictures, the Italian company owned by former Italian prime minister Silvio Berlusconi confirmed it would published topless Kate images this week in its Chi magazine in a 26-page photo special while the Irish Daily Star newspaper published a selection of images September 15 on two inside pages.
Michael O'Kane, the editor of Irish Daily Star said that Middleton was no different from Lady Gaga or Miley Cyrus and admitted to wanting to sell more issue by publishing these pictures. "The duchess would be no different to any other celeb pics we would get in," O'Kane told the BBC, adding that the images were of the type that might be included among family holiday photo albums in continental Europe. "She's not the future queen of Ireland so really the only place this is causing fury seems to be in the UK, and they are very very tasteful pictures," he said.
While most British newspapers have refrained from carrying the story all though papers doing so are selling like hot cakes, the pictures are available on nearly every other tabloids.
