Mitt Romney's wife Ann Romney earned her fashion points Tuesday night at the Republican National Convention. The aspiring First Lady wore a fire engine red belted dress by Oscar de la Renta.

In an attempt to humanize her husband, Romney delivered a personal speech about their marriage and family life.

Romney's ensemble was simple, safe, and very stepford wife. The red number was a cute look and showed the political wife's value of tradition. She paired her bold red dress with adorable black peep-toe heels and gold jewelry. This seems to be a more toned down look from her notorious $990 Reed Krakoff bird shirt. Perhaps she did too much her first go in efforts to gain fashion credit like current First Lady Michelle Obama.

The simple aesthetic suits Romney much better - it seems more authentic. Although she hasn't earned her title as a political fashionista like Obama, to Romney's credit she is the first out of the two to don Oscar de la Renta.  The designer made known his disappointment that First Lady Obama never wore his pieces (although she has worn designs from his son, Moises.)  When the First Lady wore a red McQueen dress to the state dinner for Chinese President Hu Jinato last year, de la Renta criticized her for not wearing an American designer. My understanding is that the visit was to promote American-Chinese trade - American products in China and Chinese products in America. Why do you wear European clothes?" he told WWD.

It may not be as important as health care or the economic crisis, but if Romney wears more American designers, she could possibly gain some patriotic fashion-loving voters - there's always a niche that deserves attention after all.  Romney can't take all the credit for her simple chic look. she credits her husband and campaign adviser Stuart Stevens for the red pick. "Well, frankly, I didn't realize that Stuart had to weigh in on this - or my husband," Romney told reporters. "It was going to be like my wedding night; I wasn't going to let him know what I was going to wear. But now they have opinions."
