Miss China Crowned Miss World 2012

Miss People's Republic of China was crowned Miss World 2012 at the prestigious pageant held in China on Saturday.

The whole of China was celebrating as Miss People's Republic of China, Yu Wenxia was awarded the coveted title of Miss World 2012. "When I was young I felt very lucky because so many people helped me, and I hope in the future I can help more children to feel lucky," Ms. Yu, a 23-year-old aspiring music teacher said when asked why she should be crowned.

This is the second Miss World title China has won in the last five years. In 2007, Zhang Zilin who represented China at the pageant took the honors and was crowned the first Miss World for China.

For the final evening gown round, Wenxia wore a sparkling blue gown. Last year's winner Ivian Sarcos of Venezuela looked as gorgeous as ever in a shimmering white and gold mermaid gown as she handed over the crown to the new Miss World.

Venezuela has won 6 Miss World titles making them the country to have won the most titles in this pageant, following by the United Kingdom and India, with 5 titles each to their credit.

Wenxia is 23 years old is currently studying music. She aspires to me a music teacher once she's done with her studies. "I love to smile and I like music," Yu said in a video posted on the pageant's website, in which she talks about her study of Chinese folk music.

Sophie Moulds, a 19-year-old business student from Wales, took second place. Jessica Kahawaty, 23, a law student from Australia, was crowned the second runners up.

A total of 116 contestants -- the highest ever number to take part -- took to the stage during the final in a variety of stunning gowns. A red ceremonial flag was passed over to representatives from the Southeast Asian resort island of Bali, hosts of the 2013 Miss World Final, during the ceremony. While the popularity of the contest, first held in 1951, has waned in the West, continued interest in Asian countries ensures that the final rakes in a huge global television audience.
