Is Aries Merritt gay? The question has stirred online buzz after the American hurdler who took home gold medal in the 110-meter hurdles.

“Is Aries Merritt gay?” asked Moby Dick on Yahoo! Answers.

“Not verified...but i DEFINITELY think he is.... he's too feminine and licking the lips O_o wth..lol,, if it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck...” a user quickly responded.

Other comments expressed their agreement to the suspicion that Aries Merritt is gay, because of his lip licking, green contact lenses, and his body language, such as the manner in which he throws his arms around.

Some Twitter users also alleged Aries Merritt’s sexual orientation as gay.

“Don't search "Aries Merritt" in hopes of finding others impressed by him. Do search if you want gay jokes and homophobia.” - @whitney

“is Aries Merritt gay. Cause ummm something isn't right, especially during his interview.” - @sadarian

It is quite unfortunate that many Olympians, after they gain glory by winning medals for their nations, also receive some unwelcomed comments as such.

Another victim of online buzz at the London Olympics was American gymnast Gabby Douglas, who won gold with other U.S. gymnasts for the women’s all-around, and also became the first African American woman to win the gold medal in the women’s gymnastics all-around competition.

Douglas’ golden wins were followed by a debate over her hair style, which some criticized as a misrepresentation of the African American community.

In Aries Merritt’s case, the 27-year-old track and field athlete won a gold medal in the 110-meter hurdles Wednesday night, with a time of 12.92 seconds, beating world champion Jason Richardson who finished in 13.04.

Merritt and Richardson crowned the U.S. with the nation’s first gold-silver finish since 1996.

"I've worked so hard for this moment and who knows if I'll ever get this chance again?" Aries Merritt said.

"It's a once-in-a-lifetime moment and I'm just kind of living it. I'm the champion. It still hasn't sunk in yet that I'm Olympic champion. I'm still in shock."

So far, there is no information about Merritt’s sexual orientation, and only rumor mills keep churning.
