Rappers usually go through numerous style changes throughout their career; a rapper may have started out as a hard-core gangster wearing baggy jeans but you would never guess judging by the kilt he now wears. Perhaps one of the very few rappers that have stayed consistent with their image is Snoop Dogg, or what he is now called, Snoop Lion.
First he was Snoop Doggy Dogg, then for most of his career he became simply Snoop Dogg. Now, the rapper has changed his name once again. Despite his title amendments, Snoop has always kept his signature style (with a few tweaks along the way, of course). He's stayed true to his West Coast roots, donning baggy jeans, oversized tees, and tracksuits. Overtime he added a dash of fanciness to his style wearing fedoras and occasionally wearing tailored suits. What will Snoop Lion wear?
The rapper said he was "born again" during his stay in Jamaica in January. He seems to have joined Rastafarianism. The rapper has been spotted wearing Rasta colored beanies, Rasta necklaces, and what looks like the start of dreadlocks. Snoop's rebirth has also led him to do away with gangsta music and start making music that his "kids and grandparents can listen to."
The West Coast rapper is readying a reggae album called "Reincarnated" set to hit shelves by the fall. He held a press conference in New York on Monday announcing his new phase. He played a few of his new songs, including one called "No Guns Allowed" which features his tween daughter. The album will be released along with a documentary (also titled "Reincarnated") that will feature the rapper's transition. The film will debut at the Toronto International Film Festival in September.
Snoop Doggy Dogg, Snoop Dogg, Snoop Lion, or simply his birth name, Calvin Cordozar Broadus, is sure to change up his style in a major way. He has already changed up his bad-boy attitude (although it is doubtful that will give up all of his bad boy habits; especially since one of those habits are embraced by his new found spiritual movement). The rapper who once spit the lyrics, "I'm a gangsta, but y'all knew that/ Da big boss Dogg, yeah I had to do that," now tweets photos of butterflies, candy, raindrops, and inspirational quotes. No one knows what style direction Snoop Lion will take but at least he's still keeping the long socks.
