It's been one year since we've lost one of music's most talented artists, Amy Winehouse. The British crooner died July 23, 2011 in her London home from accidental alcohol poisoning; she was only 27. Despite her battle with drugs and alcohol, Winehouse was a critically revered singer. Her soulful pitch, heartfelt lyrics, and authentic appeal are what make her short-lived career a legacy. Her debut album, "Frank" was a hit in the U.K. but her breakthrough album was "Black to Black" in 2007. The album went multiplatinum and earned her five Grammy Awards. Her father, Mitch Winehouse, says that his daughter was "Adele and Lady Gaga rolled into one."
Winehouse did not only set the tone (literally and figuratively) for indie soul music, she also sparked fashion trends. Her massive beehive hairdo is a signature characteristic that is still imitated. She wore sleeveless dresses and tops that displayed her colorful tattoo collection. Her heavy black wing-tipped eyeliner, upper lip ring, and gold doorknocker earrings created an eclectic style - retro pin-up girl flair with a rock-n-roll twist.
Her rebellious persona is what made people love and hate her. She had a toxic lifestyle that made those close to her worry yet she applied her pain to her music and style.
Amy Winehouse was a one-of-a-kind artist and trendsetter. Artists that may have been influenced by the late singer are Adele, Lana Del Rey, Katy Perry, and Lady Gaga. Take a look at the style-history of one of music's most legendary artists.
