JULY 12, 2012 - Teen protestors gathered outside of Teen Vogue offices in NYC today with signs that read "Keep it Real". The rally was led by teenage activists Carina Cruz and Emma Stydahar, members of the SPARK movement - a group dedicated improving the image of women and girls in the media. The young girls fought against Teen Vogue's use of Photoshop and airbrushing. They even drafted a petition which according to NY Mag is "just shy of 30,000 signatures).

The protestors had high hopes for change, especially since another teen fashion magazine, Seventeen, created a "Body Peace Treaty" after being pressed by SPARK for the same issue.

The girls got a chance to meet with Teen Vogue editor, Amy Astley, but that short meeting left the protestors with no resolve and a free issue of the magazine.

The Daily News reports:

[T]he teens came away from the five-minute meeting with no agreement from Astley that she would commit her mag to its own "Body Peace Treaty."

Instead, the girls were handed copies of Teen Vogue.

"It was kind of shocking how rude they were to us," said Cruz.

Teen Vogue's publicist, Erin Kaplan, issued a statement insisting that the magazine is already conscious of body image and responsible with editing:

"Teen Vogue makes a conscious and continuous effort to promote a positive body image among our readers," said Kaplan, adding the magazine features "healthy models" and includes "dozens of non-models" every year.

It's unclear to what the protesters were really after. Do they really want change or are they looking for a showy admission to their demands. Either way, the point is to show the true image of any body size or figure and not manipulate it to something more "desirable".
