Tiger Woods is happy his girlfriend Lindsey Vonn won’t be competing at the Sochi Olympics – because he knows her knee is too unstable for the stress.

“No, I’m relieved she’s not competing because of the situation in her knee,” Woods said, writes Gulf News.

“It was very unstable. She alluded to me that it was unstable just walking, so doing 80mph and doing a hard turn, I don’t think that’s really the wisest thing to do.”

Woods also talked to the New York Times about Vonn’s injury.

“As far as seeing what she’s gone through, I’ve been through it, only a slightly different version,” Woods said. “I’ve never had to do it twice like this, and to do a total reconstruction of the A.C.L. That’s tough.”

He added that Vonn’s decision to skip the Olympics won’t take away from her career.

“To be the first one to ever win in the downhill, that’s something no one can ever take away, whether she competes this year or whether she competes four years from now,” Woods said.

Vonn will now be covering the Olympics as a correspondent for NBC Sports and the Today Show – but she’ll be doing all her reporting from the US.

"I feel OK. I guess I've been through this now once before so I kind of know the drill, unfortunately," Vonn told Matt Lauer on “The Today Show,” while resting with her leg up in a brace.

"It's been almost two weeks, and it feels all right. It's a little bit less complicated than the first surgery. [They] didn't have to work on the MCL, but unfortunately had to reconstruct the ACL again and [the knee] also had significant meniscus damage. It was pretty major surgery despite being better than last time, but I'm recovering well. I'm just doing therapy, and am excited to be working with you guys.

"It's going to be so hard. It's already hard enough. You guys run commercials about Sochi about every two minutes, and it's killing me! I'm trying not to watch as much as much as I can. It's going to be really, really hard to watch the Alpine events. I always love watching the other athletes compete like in figure skating, luge and all that stuff, but it's going to be really hard to watch the Alpine events."
