When Katy Perry’s hit single “Roar” was released this summer, Sara Bareilles fans quickly pointed out that it sounded an awful lot like the singer-songwriter’s single “Brave,” released five months previously. Cue accusations of plagiarism, a viral mashup of the two songs, and statements to the press brushing the whole thing aside. However, now “Roar” and “Brave” will go head-to-head for the Grammy for Best Pop Solo Performance and the results could stir up the controversy all over again.

“Roar” certainly has the lead on “Brave,” sales-wise – “Roar” hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart while Bareilles peaked at No. 26 after the controversy spurred a boost in sales.

After the buzz over the songs’ similarities went viral, Sara Bareilles gave several interviews saying that she didn’t think Perry had plagiarized her.

“Katy’s a friend of mine and we’ve known each other a really long time, so she even texted me about it and we went back and forth,” Bareilles told ABC News Radio.

“The shame that I feel that’s happened is that it’s become a drama. It’s putting this negative spin on two artists that are choosing to share positive messages,” she added.

“If I’m not mad I don’t know why anybody else is upset. I’m like, ‘Relax, let’s just celebrate that we can be out there and encouraging people to, like, feel strong and empowered.’”

Both songs have a message to them: Bareilles has said that “Brave,” co-written with Jack Antonoff of fun., was inspired by a gay friend’s coming out, while Perry has described Roar as “a song about being able to finally speak out for yourself.”

Listen to both songs below and then tell us – who should win the Grammy for Best Pop Solo Performance?
