“Downton Abbey” was recently renewed for a fifth season, but it looks like some of the main actors may not stay for long: both Elizabeth McGovern (Lady Cora) and Maggie Smith (the Dowager Countess) have hinted that they may soon leave “Downton” to focus on other aspects of their careers.

Dame Maggie Smith recently received the Evening Standard Icon Award and while accepting the award, she revealed that she wants to return to the stage, writes Playbill.com.

"I'm very sad because I haven't done anything in theatre to justify this. I wish I had. Doing something on stage at the National the other night was extraordinary. I'd love to do more,” she said.

"I would love to do more theatre work but really, I don't get any offers," Smith added. "I'm with my agent here and I'm told I'm busy for the next year, but after that I would love to do more work on the stage — especially after winning this award. If you could help me put the word out, maybe that would help! Maybe you could put an advert in for me."

Meanwhile, Elizabeth McGovern has said that she wants to focus more on her music career, even admitting she may leave “Downton Abbey” after Season 5.

"I'm completely obsessed by this musical part of my life. It's new and such a challenge. I would never have dreamed of myself fronting this band like this even five years ago - it was just a little hobby,” McGovern told the Sunday Express.

She even revealed that she’s distracted on set.

"I found myself writing a verse to a song while I was on set looking at Allan Leech (Tom Branson) saying his lines,” she said.

Asked if she would leave the show, McGovern answered, "I know there is going to be another series but don't know whether I would be up for a season after that.”

The last time lead actors quit the show, their characters died gruesome on-screen deaths. Jessica Findlay-Brown’s character, Lady Sybil, died of complications from childbirth and Dan Stevens’ Matthew Crawley died in a car accident in Season 3.
