Many Hindu women around the world celebrated Karva Chauth on Tuesday, a holiday to pray for the well being and long life of their respective husbands, including many Bollywood celebrities. Aishwarya Rai Bachchan followed the tradition with her husband as she fasted in honor of Abhishek Bachchan.

For the former Miss World, this Karva Chauth was a lot different as her husband was abroad shooting for a film. Zee News reported that the Bachchan couple Skyped with each other as they celebrated the Hindu holiday and broke his wife’s fast. Amitabh Bachchan posted on Twitter expressing his thoughts about the auspicious occasion.

“Karvachauth over... moon sighted, prayers done through the sieve, food eaten and water drunk by the wives... dressed in fineries!,” tweeted Bachchan.

“Abhishek out of country on shoot...so face of husband seen through Skype, for Karvachauth by Aishwarya...what times we live in,” tweeted Amitabh Bachchan.

“The culture and the traditions of time...tested and performed diligently...for what? For the benefit and longevity of another!!,” explained Bachchan about the holiday.

Aishwarya Rai dressed in a green suit and was spotted on the balcony of her residence in Mumbai with father-in-law Amitabh Bachchan as she waited to break her fast.

Other Bollywood celebrities such as Akshay Kumar and Twinkle Khanna celebrated the holiday as well. The couple were spotted enjoying Karva Chauth dinner at their friend Gayatri Joshi’s house in Mumbai. Meanwhile, Anil kapoor also hosted a family get together to celebrate the holiday while his elder brother Boney Kapoor was spotted with his wife Sridevi.

Karva Chauth is a one-day festival celebrated by Hindu women in North India in which married women fast from sunrise to moonrise for the safety and longevity of their husbands. The festival falls on the fourth day after the full moon and sometimes unmarried women observe the fast for their fiances or desired husbands.
