In Season 1, Christina Hendricks turned heads as sharp, sassy secretary Joan Harris. She also turned heads on the 2008 Emmys red carpet, wearing a sexy green Tadashi Shoji gown with a plunging neckline.

“Mad Men” fans know that the characters’ personal styles have changed drastically throughout the six-season TV show, reflecting both the changing fashions and character development. We’ve seen the stars’ style change through the years, too, as they’ve gone from almost-unknowns to A-list actors and actresses.

Christina Hendricks, nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actress In A Drama Series for the fourth time, might be the best example of this style evolution, both on-screen and off. When Hendricks, 38, first appeared on “Mad Men,” her acting resume was unremarkable, save for a brief but popular appearance in the cult TV show “Firefly.” Now, she’s an A-list star, splitting screentime with Ryan Gosling in “Drive” and Charlize Theron in the upcoming “Dark Places.”

Hendricks’ character, Joan Harris, née Holloway, has undergone a similar transformation, from secretary to business partner and single mother. In “Mad Men’s” latest season, she defended her role in the company against doubters like Harry Crane, formed a friendship with the mysterious Bob Benson and worked with Peggy to nab a big new client, Avon cosmetics.

On the 2009 Emmys red carpet, Hendricks showed off her curves in a purple printed L’wren Scott gown after a dramatic season that saw her character Joan end an affair with her boss, Roger Sterling, and get engaged to her cruel fiancé, Greg Harris.

Hendricks scored her first Emmy nomination for her performance in “Mad Men” Season 3, in which Joan struggles in her relationship with Greg Harris and quits her job before joining the new, reformed agency at Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce. Hendricks went for a soft, pretty look on the 2010 red carpet in a lavender Zac Posen gown.

Hendricks shone on the red carpet and onscreen in 2011, with her second nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress. And she deserved it — onscreen, she became pregnant with Roger’s child but decided to pass the baby off as Greg’s son. She wore a silk satin gown by Johanna Johnson — reportedly the first dress she tried on when looking for an Emmys outfit.

Hendricks scored another Emmy nomination for her role in “Mad Men’s” fifth season, which saw her possibly most dramatic turn yet, as she sold her body to the Jaguar salesman in return for an agency-saving account and a partnership. On the 2012 red carpet, Hendricks looked angelic in a silver-white Christian Siriano gown.
