Ben Affleck ‘Batman Vs. Superman’: ‘Man of Steel’ Henry Cavill Defends Controversial Casting, Says ‘More Than Excited’ To Work With Ben Despite Petition

Ben Affleck’s casting as Batman in the “Man of Steel” sequel, “Batman Vs. Superman,” has been controversial – fans have even started a petition to get Affleck removed from the superhero film franchise. However, Affleck’s new costar Henry Cavill has reportedly defended the casting decision, saying he’s “more than excited” to work with Affleck.

BBC presenter Kevin Pamplin spoke to Cavill at a rugby match in Jersey and revealed that Cavill is “more than excited” to work with Affleck, according to Yahoo! Movies.

"He is such a great actor," Cavill said. "I'm so very excited about working with him. He is going to have such a presence. I can't wait."

“Man of Steel” director Zack Snyder, who will also direct the new film in the franchise, has also spoken out in support of the casting decision, reports Entertainment Weekly.

“Ben provides an interesting counter-balance to Henry’s Superman. He has the acting chops to create a layered portrayal of a man who is older and wiser than Clark Kent and bears the scars of a seasoned crime fighter, but retain the charm that the world sees in billionaire Bruce Wayne,” Snyder said in a release.

“I can’t wait to work with him,” he added.

Warner Bros. execs agreed.

“We knew we needed an extraordinary actor to take on one of DC Comics’ most enduringly popular Super Heroes, and Ben Affleck certainly fits that bill, and then some,” said Warner Bro. exec Greg Silverman.

“His outstanding career is a testament to his talent and we know he and Zack will bring new dimension to the duality of this character.”

However, many fans aren’t as excited about Affleck’s casting. A petition on asking Warner Bros to remove Ben Affleck from the film currently has almost 74,000 signatures, with a goal of 75,000.

“His acting skill is not even close to being believable as Bruce Wayne and he won't do the role justice. He's not intimidating enough for the role of Batman. Batman is someone that strikes fear in the hearts of men. His portrayal of Daredevil was atrocious and he's not remotely close to an action star or a superhero. Please find someone else and deliver to the fans what they want,” the petition, created by John Roden, reads.
